A Postscript to "The Honour of Submitting"
In keeping with standard practice during the war, Vandervell's article, The Honour of Submitting rightly omits operational details. However, a bit of dot-connecting is possible—leading to the knowledge that the ML and crew of the article was ML 357 under the command of Lieutenant JF Buller Kitson, DSC, RNVR, and Sub-Lieutenant JHW Stubbs, RNVR. Along with these officers the following men were Gazetted on 19 February, 1918: Chief Motor Mechanic John Marland, Chief Motor Mechanic George E. Crabb, Leading Deckhand JH Willacy, Deckhand JH Hooley, Deckhand CH Proctor, and Deckhand Norman Wright.
In The Auxiliary Patrol Chatterton mentions this little incident along with the ML number and her CO's name. This, combined with details published in "Unofficial" in The Yachting Monthly, led to the above information.
